Radio DJ Mark Pilgrim spreads the word about the blood drive on the air waves.
The South African Blood Service, in partnership Hot 91.9 FM, held a blood drive to increase their stock of blood before Easter.
The partnership with the radio station was to support and increase awareness of the blood collection at Clearwater Mall.
Rebecca and Alan José wait to donate blood.
Lebo Seatlholo, SANBS public relations practitioner, confirmed 120 units of blood were collected during the recent drive. Each unit can save up to three lives.
“A unit of blood can be separated into three blood products namely, plasma, platelets and red cells,” Seatlholo explained.
Hot 91.9 FM founder and managing director, Lloyd Madurai said,
” The team decided to get involved because we have all had someone in our lives who was in need of a blood transfusion, and the blood platelets are also used in cancer research. Five people in the team have been affected in some way by cancer. It is also our way of giving back and we are thrilled to be in partnership with SANBS.”
Richard and Liana Prall lie on the SANBS stretchers while they donate blood.
Radio DJ Mark Pilgrim had a live broadcast from the mall to encourage shoppers to donate blood. Some members of the team donated blood themselves.
“We have a regular blood drive at Clearwater Mall and our next blood drive will be from 27 to 30 April from 9.30am to 3pm at the upper Stuttafords Court,” Seatlholo added.
