Pedestrians avoid bridge in Zandspruit due to criminal elements

ZANDSPRUIT – Pedestrians encouraged to use overhead bridge when crossing Beyers Naude Drive.

To reduce the number of pedestrians knocked down by cars, Metro police in conjunction with Gauteng police officers embarked on a joint pedestrian awareness campaign in Zandspruit on 23 March.

Due to the increase of pedestrians being hit by cars on Beyers Naude Drive, Metro police officers took it upon themselves to conduct a walkabout to educate pedestrians about the usefulness of the overhead pedestrian bridge in the area.

Metro police’s Superintendent Wandile Mrubetha explained the purpose of this initiative and said, “The purpose of the campaign was to encourage pedestrians to use the overhead bridge. In the past three weeks, six pedestrians were knocked down by vehicles.”

Illegal connections on the overhead bridge has led Zandspruit pedestrians to use Beyers Naude Drive to cross the road.

Mrubetha said he was made aware by the residents that pedestrians avoid using the bridge for safety reasons.

“The pedestrians are complaining that the bridge is far and unsafe to use because of illegal electricity connections on the bridge,” he said.

As a solution, Mrubetha promised the residents that he would conduct another operation involving City Power and Eskom to disconnect and remove the wires.
