Rare Disease SA aims to raise the bar
ROODEPOORT – The organisation hosted a #Denim Walk in support of rare diseases.
Rare Diseases Society of South Africa is hoping to take its awareness campaigns to the next level as they enjoyed massive support during this year’s project.
Megan Hunter, spokesperson of the organisation said, “Next year we are hoping to take this [the campaign] nationwide to help create awareness for Rare Disease Day which falls on the last day of February on a yearly basis.”
The organisation hosted a #Denim Walk, in support of rare diseases at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens on 26 February. They also commemorated Rare Disease Day on 28 February at the same venue.
Both events were aimed at creating awareness of more than 6 500 rare diseases that occur in the country and across the world.
More than 200 supporters donned turquoise T-shirts, wore their favourite denims and rare diseases ribbons and stickers at the events.
“Our first ever #DeminWalk was a hugely successful event. Patients, caregivers, family and friends [attended] to help create awareness for rare diseases, as well as show their support for all our rare warriors,” said Hunter.
“With the beautiful scenery, everyone who attended was encouraged to take a walk around the gardens, or brave the climb up to the top of the waterfall.”
After the fun challenges attendees sat around with family and friends for a picnic.
