Sinkhole has been thoroughly repaired in Weltevreden Park
WELTEVREDEN PARK – A sinkhole on Rinyani Avenue, has been properly repaired.
A troublesome sinkhole on Rinyani Avenue in Weltevreden Park has been repaired thoroughly by the Johannesburg Roads Agency.
The sinkhole was temporarily repaired by the agency’s workers after it was reported by a concerned road user on 13 February.
However, the sinkhole began to deteriorate after a few days, prompting motorists to drive in the opposite lane or find alternative routes, for weeks.
Steven Kruger, a maintenance expert, who discovered the initial sinkhole and alerted the relevant authorities, had described it as a catastrophe waiting to happen, fearing that heavy vehicles driving over it could cause a major collapse.
The agency’s spokesperson, Bertha Peters-Scheepers, explained the cause of the delay to fix the sinkhole.
“The sinkhole was secured as an interim measure and due to rainfall, asphalt could not be laid,” she said.
Peters-Scheepers added that the respective depot maintenance team was instructed to undertake repairs once asphalt was made available.
