LITTLE FALLS – Following the issue of access control of municipal-owned parks, which has caused an uproar in the Little Falls and StrubensValley community, local residents shared their opinions on the matter …

SIMON FISH: Before Lifco, we used to have an issue of vagrants squatting and destroying the park. Since Lifco’s intervention, the crime in the area has diminished. Lifco has done various projects to uplift the quality of the park like cleaning and fencing it. Therefore, they wanted to restrict the park for the benefit of the community.

RICHARD HERSELMAN: Yes, parks’ access must be controlled because of crime. Unfortunately, that’s how we are supposed to live in order for everyone to be safe.

MPHO BERTHA: First of all, its illegal to control access to public-owned property. Permission for doing so must be granted by the municipality and the community must be informed. If this does not happen then public property must be kept open for all to access it at their own risk

PATRICK TWOTONE: Parks must be locked because people get robbed and raped. They even try killing people in public parks. Management of public parks has to be implemented by the community in conjunction with the municipality.

NIXON KHUMALO: I think public parks must be controlled because some people misuse them to commit crime. I think a managed park can make a huge difference in terms of keeping it clean and crime free.
