Don’t call JRA, call City Parks

FAIRLAND – City Parks explains its responsibilities with regards to parks, grass cutting and trees.

FAIRLAND – The Ward 89 public meeting saw many departments join the discussions, one of which was City Parks and Zoo, which touched on parks and grass cutting.

Molefe Seale, stakeholder relations management at City Parks and Zoo, explained the difference between various categories parks and open spaces fall into and their maintenance schedules.

Flagship parks are maintained on a seven-day cycle, while developed parks are maintained every 30 days.

Undeveloped parks and public open spaces that are designated for park use are on a 90-day cycle.

However, not all open spaces are designated for park use.

Some are privately owned or owned by other departments, such as housing or education, who then are in charge of the space’s maintenance.

Not all public open spaces are designated for park use.

Seale reminded residents, during the meeting on 22 February at Laerskool Fairland, that City Parks does not have bylaw enforcement powers, and this is why they work with Metro police with regards to issues such as vagrants.

Most queries Ciy Parks receive, according to Seale, are to do with grass cutting.

He explained City Parks now has a partnership with the Joburg Road Agency to cut the grass around the main arterials and road islands.

However, there are prioritised roads, such as main arterials and internal linking roads.

Seale added that all street trees (trees on the side of the road) are maintained by City Parks, whether they are in need of feathering, pruning, cutting or removal – it is their responsibility.

City Parks will only remove trees if they pose a danger, such as if it has fallen on the road. This is classified as an emergency and is a first priority situation. In such an event, the Region C call centre can be reached on 011 712 6600.
