Rare Disease SA aims to raise the bar
ROODEPOORT – Joburgers made aware of rare diseases on Rare Disease Day held at Water Sisulu Botanical Gardens.
ROODEPOORT – Rare Diseases South Africa is hoping to take its awareness campaigns to the next level as they enjoyed massive support at this year’s project.
Megan Hunter, spokesperson for the organisation said, “Next year, we are hoping to take this [campaign] nationwide to help create awareness for Rare Diseases Day, which falls on the last day of February on a yearly basis.”
The organisation hosted the International Denim Walk, in support of rare diseases at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens on 26 February. They also commemorated Rare Diseases Day on 28 February at the same venue.
Both events were aimed at creating awareness of over 6 500 rare diseases in the country and across the world.

The park was filled with blue T-shirts, with over 200 supporters clad in their favourite jeans and rare diseases ribbons and stickers, at both events.
“Our first ever #DeminWalk was hugely a successful event. Patients, caregivers, family and friends [attended] to help create awareness for rare diseases, as well as show their support for all our rare warriors,” said Hunter, who shared glimpses of the event. “With the beautiful scenery, everyone who attended was encouraged to take a walk around the gardens, or brave the climb up to the top of the waterfall.”
Hunter added that after the fun challenges, attendees sat around with family and friends for a picnic.
