Young athletes aim for district championships

RUIMSIG – Athletes from the Johannesburg North district compete against each other in order to become a champion.

 

RUIMSIG – Young athletes from the Johannesburg North District gathered at the Ruimsig Athletics Stadium to compete in another round of the Cluster Athletics Championship.

According to Pat Mashigo, the district sports coordinator and chairperson of the local organising committee, the championship was hosted together with the departments of education and sport and recreation and gave athletes the opportunity to be selected for the team that will represent the Johannesburg North District D10.

Mashigo said the championship was for primary and high schools and on 16 February more than 1 000 primary school athletes challenged each other on the track.

He added that the high schools would compete on 25 February and the selected athletes would further compete on 10 to 11 March in Germiston.

“This meet also creates an opportunity for sports teachers to identify the best athletes they can recommend to clubs and sports federations,” he said.

He added that the athletes took part in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 500m, 3 000m and 5 000m events and that they hailed from Cosmo City, Lanseria, Randburg, Diepkloof, Pimville, Orlando and Fourways.
