LITTLE FALLS – Over the years, Trinityhouse Preparatory Little Falls has invested in Matla Combined School and now it has welcomed two young graduates of Matla.
Abigail Mafu (20) started working as a sports coach at Trinityhouse in May last year and is currently studying psychology through Unisa.
“Growing up in a home with little means of survival and raised by a single mother who battled as a breadwinner being a domestic worker, you take nothing for granted,” said Mafu.
“Sometimes it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but who would’ve seen what I’ve become today; thanks to the investments of someone who looked beyond themselves and their school’s needs to invest in mine.
“Trinityhouse has groomed me and helped me discover who I am, and has been a financial support to me and my family. Thanks to the principal, Karen Cammell, Frikkie Grobler, the deputy principal sports and arts, and the Trinity staff for giving me this life-changing opportunity.”
The second graduate, Eunice Matlare (19), also started as a sports coach last March and is currently studying towards a bachelor’s degree in childhood education through Unisa.
“I believe I’m going to be the change in my family; the one who will bring a good name and change our history and circumstances,” she said.
“Trinityhouse Little Falls Prep has given me that opportunity. I have learned so much being at Trinity, such as perseverance, commitment to hard work and wisdom in making decisions for my future.”
The school started the relationship with Matla Combined School which led to this opportunity for graduates in 2013. In the past, Trinity has collected and delivered Easter eggs for the schoolchildren, as well as painted classrooms and even partnered with Renico Construction to erect an assembly shelter. At Christmas time, Trinity organises gifts for schoolchildren and teachers from grades one to seven.
During Grade 12 exams, schoolchildren of Matla Combined School camp out at the school and Trinity contributes towards food throughout this time. Last year a blanket drive was held to give Matla schoolchildren lap blankets for winter and Trinity made scarves for each one of them. This year, Trinity is endeavouring to create a soccer field for Matla.
Trinity house gets its schoolchildren involved in these projects as they believe it is important for them to learn to give back and they look forward to having Mafu and Matlare stay on at the school for as long as they like.
