Black eagle update: The honeymoon is over

POORTVIEW – Makatsa looks to be building a new nest for the upcoming breeding season.

POORTVIEW – The long honeymoon rest period is over and the season for the Black Eagles to get ready to produce new offspring has arrived and nest building has commenced.

Johann van den Berg of the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans explained that with a nest precariously built on a normally eastern-facing rock face, the youngster may enjoy the morning sun while being protected from the sometimes harsh western afternoon sun. The white fluffy down protects it from adverse cold spells, while the mother is always there for added protection.

He added the couple is starting to show signs of getting down to a more domesticated life.

“They are gradually getting prepared for some hard work refurbishing the nest, or as the case might seem, building a new one altogether. Makatsa appears to prefer a new location for the nest of her choice, but at the moment, it looks a bit like a haphazard pile of sticks,” said Van der Berg in a report.

Consequently, the webcam used to live stream footage of the eagle’s nest may not be able to give the best view of the nest in the new location. However, Van der Berg reports it is still early days, and that in the end, we will all have to wait and see what transpires.

“We always keep the interest of the eagles at heart, which means the webcam will not be relocated for this breeding season as we do not wish to disturb them in any way,” he concluded.
