Call to help educate special needs children at Special Wings

WILGEHEUWEL – Local resident shares her story of the rise of her non-profit organisation, Special Wings Foundation.

WILGEHEUWEL – Mother and founder of the Special Wings Foundation, Tammy Nash, knows all too well the battle of paying school fees for a special needs child.

Nash struggled to pay her own son’s fees at a special needs school and began fundraising for the school as a means to pay her son’s fees. While working with the school, Nash saw the need for financial assistance for other parents in the same situation and looked into opening her own non-profit organisation, Special Wings Foundation.

“We help anyone in South Africa but we like to take on children and parents that are in Johannesburg so they can be involved in our events and help sell tickets or whatever is needed, but we don’t turn anyone away,” said Nash.

The foundation aims to raise funds for special needs children’s education through fundraising and making and selling crafts. The foundation is currently helping about eight children, where each child’s education costs R6 300 per month.
Nash said the foundation was desperate for any persons or businesses to sponsor a child or to support their fundraising initiatives. The foundation will hold various events from golf days to comedy nights throughout the year, and information on the events can be found on the foundation’s website or Facebook page.

One of the foundation’s project this year is the 1 000 jeans drive. The foundation collects second-hand jeans and uses the material to make anything from aprons to pencil bags and book covers.
