AVOID: Welties sinkhole a ‘catastrophe waiting to happen’
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Disaster looms following the development of a sinkhole in Weltevreden Park.
WELTEVREDEN PARK – A private maintenance expert has described a sinkhole which has evolved in the middle of the road in Weltevreden Park as a catastrophe waiting to happen.
Steven Kruger from SKM maintenance was attending to a job when he came across the sinkhole between Kastaiining Street and Rinyani Avenue on 13 February.
Out of shock and kindness, Kruger delayed his job and directed traffic away from the hole, with help from his colleagues, while trying to get Johannesburg Roads Agency and Metro police to assist.

“The hole is humongous and it’s dangerous for trucks and cars using the road,” said Kruger, adding that the sinkhole could collapse anytime and cause havoc if not attended to immediately.
“The hole seems to be small but it’s deeper when you look right inside it,” Kruger said, after assessing and measuring the hole.
Public relations and communications assistant manager of Johannesburg Roads Agency, Karishma Ganpath, confirmed that the sinkhole was reported through the City’s call centre.
“The sinkhole was reported via City of Johannesburg call centre,” she said, adding that a site inspection has been scheduled.
