Cops raid crime hotspots

A team made up of Honeydew, Metro and K9 police patrolled in Randburg and Honeydew looking for car thieves and car jammers, among other suspects.

Honeydew and Metro police teamed up with the K9 unit on 10 February to address increasing crime in Banbury Cross Village Shopping Centre, Golden Harvest Park and parts of Malibongwe Drive.

Lieutenant-General Irene Sekwakwa, addressing police officers assembled at Honeydew Police Station before raiding the targeted areas, said the operation was aimed at curbing theft of and out of vehicles, conducting stop-and-search operations, and enforcing municipal bylaws.

Lieutenant-General Irene Sekwakwa addresses the three police units shortly before the operation.

She said officers needed to be on the lookout for a white VW Polo, with occupants who had impersonated Metro police and robbed pedestrians. There had been crime alerts on social media and other platforms recently about a VW Polo with tinted windows and black mag wheels.

Sekwakwa told Roodepoort Northsider that officers had conducted stop-and-search operations in crime hotspots. But no arrests were made.
