JRA gives speed bumps the red light
Minimal safety measures planned for dangerous road.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has given the red light to most requests and suggestions to solve the problem of fatal accidents and reckless driving on Ouklip Road.
Although admitting that speeding on this road is a problem, JRA says it will look only at a few requests.
A stricter police presence, speed law enforcement, a permanent speeding camera and reducing the speed limit from 60km/h to 40km/h seem most likely, while speed bumps and putting up three-way stops or traffic signals are a no-go.
According to JRA Communications Officer, Mosa Makhalima, “The JRA has received numerous complaints on numerous occasions regarding speeding along this road. The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) should assist in monitoring this situation.
“The JMPD has been requested to consider installing a permanent speed camera along the route.”
He adds that, “Traffic counts have been done several times to establish if some intersections can be converted into three-way stops. These counts were conducted at Ouklip and Graphite as well as at Ruhama Street but the counts did not warrant three-way stops or traffic signals.”
Makhalima says that the main reason why speed bumps cannot be installed is that the road is a public transport route.
