Celebration at Walter Sisulu gardens

POORTVIEW – Despite the rain, Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens was still filled with the sounds of Christmas carols.

Not even the rains could dampen the festive spirit that saw multitudes attend the annual Christmas carols held at Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens on 25 and 26 November.

The evening of 25 November was spoilt by heavy downpours and had to be cancelled. However, on 26 November the gardens were abuzz with activities from a morning spinathon; to browsing stalls where patrons could buy pancakes, taste interesting drink combinations, view various gadgets on sale, make sand art and children could entertain themselves on the jumping castles before the whole family could end the day singing Christmas carols.

The crowd was entertained by the Soweto Marimba Youth League which drummed up everything from African traditional music to carols and even Michael Jackson’s hits, which kept the crowds entertained.

The Welsh Male Voice Choir closed off the evening with carols that had everyone singing along with the lyrics projected on large TV screens.

“It was a really good way to spend time with family and the event was a befitting way to say goodbye to the year that was. We wish all our loyal visitors a Merry Christmas and joyful festive season,” said Ronny Tshabalala, marketing and communications manager of Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens.

Rata Social Services benefitted from the event by having the opportunity to sell candles for the carols.
