Welridge ditches shoes for the love of animals

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Barefeet bring much-needed help to the animals at SARAC.

The schoolchildren of Welridge Academy Primary School went barefoot during a fun day on 25 November for the animals at Sowetan Animal Rescue and Advisory Centre (Sarac).

In exchange for R10, the schoolgoers were allowed to enjoy a school day without school shoes. Principal, Janine Joubert said, “We asked our children for a small donation to aid the great work they do at Sarac for the animals and the community.”

Not only did the children donate to a worthy cause, but extra donations of dog and blankets flooded in from the schoolchildren. The Grade 4s and Grade 5s even elected to donate the money allocated to their Spur field trip to the cause.

Jerry Selwane, the founder of Sarac said, “We are so excited to use the donations to help all of the abused and orphaned animals at our centre. I feel over the moon when I see young children working hard to help their community.”

The schoolgoers were treated to a presentation by Selwane and his colleagues on how to take care of their pets and the work that is done at centre. He even brought along two puppies who had been rescued when they were two-weeks-old. They were bottle fed by the staff at the centre when they were accepted into their family and started their happier new lives.

The school was able to donate R5 000 to the centre along with dog food and blankets.
