Kings and queens of chess
POORTVIEW – King's School players reap first and second place medals in a national chess tournament.
The King’s School West Rand wiped out the competition at the South African Christian Schools Association National Chess tournament in Alberton.
Twenty-four players of the school participated in the six-round tournament in late October and all came back with points behind their name. However, six of them brought home medals with three of the six winning all their games.

“The competition was very tight, as some of our participants in the higher age groups won five out of six games and did not even place in the top three,” said teacher, Maria Luchies.
Some of the school’s players felt the competition was tough and they were nervous, while others found their games rather easy. “I thought I was not going to do well but I came out first so I don’t think it was that bad,” said Unathi Magudulela, who placed first in the U11 girls’ age group.
The results were as follows:
U9 Girls – Gabriella Shordries (first)
U9 Boys – Drake van Diggelen (first), Brett Marshall (second)
U11 Girls – Unathi Magudulela (first), Kaylin Pennells (second)
U11 Boys – Taonga Kapeza (first)
U15 Girls – Katleho Ramotso (first).
“We thank all our chess children for taking part in the competitions throughout the year. This was the last one for 2016. We are looking forward to a great 2017 as well,” Luchies concluded.
