Men empowered by new qualifications

WILGEHEUWEL – Two people employed after completing a security guard course.

The Mjolnir Learning Centre is not only driven to help young people through their tutor-centre but also wants to teach them valuable skills that could better their lives.

Dedicated tutor, Erika Muller said that the centre gives people the opportunity to get security training and, thereafter, a certificate enabling them to work as security guards.

Eveline Jones, also from Mjolnir, said that she is very proud of the two men who received their security certificates and are now doing very well for themselves as security guards at the Pick n Pay at Brightwater Commons.

Jones explained that Emmanuel Ndou had previously worked as a gardener, but it was always his dream to be a security guard – and with the help of Muller he received his certificate.

Yonela Mbhulelo also once worked for Jones at the centre, but after receiving his security certificate he also got a job at Pick n Pay.

Jones explained that the trainees can decide on the hours that they can come to the centre. “The handbook is a self-help book, so they can learn in their own time as well.”

She added that after getting jobs as security guards, Ndou and Mbhulelo’s entire attitude changed. “They are so excited to call me and tell me how well they are doing and how impressed their employer is with them.”

Jones said that it is every person’s responsibility to at least try and empower one person to better their life. “We have two hands that we can use to help others, whether it be through academics or skill building.”
