Maximum effort equals maximum efficiency
POORTVIEW – King's School West Rand brings home trophies for their energy efficient cars.
King’s School West Rand’s Science Club pupils participated in the Shell Eco-marathon South Africa, which challenges teams of pupils to design, build, test and drive energy-efficient vehicles.
This year, 15 teams from different high schools and universities in South Africa and the African continent registered for the competition. Each winning team would have designed a car that drove the longest distance using the least amount of energy in their chosen category. The Eco-marathon is open for vehicles in the gasoline, diesel, ethanol, battery electric and hydrogen categories.
On the first day of the competition, held at the Zwartskop Raceway on 15 and 16 October, the pupils’ hydrogen car passed the technical inspection and then won first place for speed and safety. The hydrogen car reached a speed of 327km/kWh.
The team experienced technical problems with their battery car and were not able to complete their second attempt on the track. The battery car reached a speed of 222km/kWh and placed third.
“We are extremely proud of their achievements and rejoice with them. May the Lord continue to challenge and grow them in their area of expertise,” said marketing and admissions officer, Michelle Dos Ramos.
