ROODEPOORT – Marcel and Le Roux Steyn appears in court alone.

Number one and two accused, Christiaan Kruger and Fabian Luff had all charges dropped as there wasn’t enough evidence against them. Finance brokers, Anthony Scholefield and Kevin McAlpine and ReMax real estate agent, Hanle Lategan were murdered between 10 and 31 May.

Regional Magistrate Delize Smith previously explained that the state has a strong case against the accused as video footage surfaced with both Steyn siblings drawing money from the Delta Spar at the time of the murders. A photo of a tied-up Lategan also was found on Marcel’s phone. Blood was found in their mother’s car. It is believed that the car was used to dump the body of Lategan in a field in Randfontein.

Marcel looked untidy as she appeared in court wearing a brown jersey and Le Roux wearing a black hoodie. Smith allowed the media to take photos of the accused for the first time. The siblings looked very impressed with themselves and grinned as cameras flashed around them.

The State prosecutor explained that the police might need to conduct an identification procedure, but that Marcel was not very cooperative in this matter. Smith then needed to explain to her that this might only take place if the police need it. The siblings now face three charges of murder, three charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping and theft.

Smith said that they might also face a charge of racketeering. This could mean another 25-year life sentence if found guilty. The case was postponed to 7 November and transferred to the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court as Le Roux has other cases pending against him.
