Increased crime in Honeydew

HONEYDEW – CPF Sector 2 meeting addresses difficult topics of high crime rates.

Representatives from the Honeydew Police Station, security companies, Joburg Metro police, residents’ associations, Ward 126 councillor David Brand and the Honeydew CPF came together for the monthly Honeydew CPF Sector 2 meeting held on 29 September.

Ward 126 representative, Sergeant Ayanda Otto gave attendees feedback on the recent Allen Glen High School raid. Otto further pointed out that homeless people are a big problem within the ward, however, the person living on the corner of Vale and Fern roads was recently removed. “People gave him blankets so he returns to the area.” He urged residents not to give food, blankets or clothes to indigent people, as this encouraged them to remain in the area.

Some representatives of residents’ associations also complained about companies that advertise by placing balloons on pavements and in residents’ gardens. “Advertising like balloons and pamphlet distribution are not allowed on public roads,” said Otto.

As 30 September was the last day that Otto represented Ward 126, he thanked everyone for their support.

Honeydew police, Sector 2 manager Sergeant Nicolas Makhura commented on the recent provincial crime statistics. He made it clear that he is very worried about Honeydew Police Station’s position on the list crime stats in Gauteng. He explained that Honeydew is second to Johannesburg central; while in third place is Hillbrow. “Even though our stats improved with 5.1 per cent, the numbers are still very high.”

Makhura added that the number of house robberies had increased. “On 27 September, alone, we had three house robberies within Sector 2.” The numbers for hijacking, theft out of motor vehicles and malicious damage to property, all went up.

The issue of no police cells at the station was brought up again, with no resolution in sight.

Honeydew CPF Sector 2 chairperson, John Baisley urged residents’ associations to work with the community and the police, to bring the high crime numbers down.
