Locals play canoe polo in Italy

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Two residents compete in the Canoe Polo World Championship in Italy.

Weltevreden Park residents, Kevin and David Rodrigues, joined the rest of the South African canoe polo team in Syracuse, Italy, for the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Polo World Championship.

The games began today (30 August) after two days of friendlies against Brazil and Ireland.

SA will take on Switzerland and Portugal on 31 August and New Zealand on 1 September in the pool stage.

Jennie Dallas, the Gauteng Canoe Union public relations manager, said the sport is a rapidly growing discipline, and is unlike any other canoe sport.

“Canoe polo is a game where two teams battle it out with a water polo ball. The sport is as much fun to play as it is to watch,” she said.
