Lights, action, showcase!

RUIMSIG – Maragon hosted their annual showcase of their best performances from the year.

For three nights in a row grades 10,11 and 12 drama pupils of Maragon Ruimsig performed a showcase, Backstage, of their best performance pieces of this year.

This showcase was also an opportunity for the Grade 12 pupils to put in extra on-stage practice for their preliminary exams and finals; however, it was the Grade 11’s task to make sure the nights were a success. The Grade 11s ran the show as a school project to learn how to run a theatre, like a business.

The pieces chosen for Backstage were picked for their entertainment value. “This year we had an exceptionally varied programme and very good performances. It was great to have a warm, receptive audience. The audience was a bit wild on the last night but the pupils were able to fill the stage with their energy and get them to settle down,” said drama teacher, Shaun Hansel.

Backstage featured comedic monologues, which were pre-written, movement theatre and mime. The showcase was the last time Grade 12 pupils would perform on stage at Maragon.

The proceeds made from the showcase nights, on 17 to 19 August, are kept by the Grade 11s and will be used to better the drama department. On this year’s wishlist for the drama department is a coffee machine.
