School shoes for those who need them most
ROODEPOORT - Hope Restoration Ministries gives school shoes for children in need.
Hope Restoration Ministries (HRM), Roodepoort Campus, distributed more than 100 pairs of school shoes and 100 blankets to residents at the Jerusalem informal settlement. The shoes were collected by the Seed of Hope children, which is HRM’s, children’s ministry.
Hope Restoration’s outreach team, known as Hands of Restoration, went to the informal settlement to identify children who were in need of school shoes. The children were invited to the church to receive their shoes. Children of different ages, along with their parents, participated in a brief church service and were treated to a lunch.
According to HRM’s pastor, Percy Mongwai, the city of Jerusalem is an important landmark as it is a holy city. He added that the Jerusalem settlement is equally important to HRM. “Jerusalem has a special place in our hearts as a church. We will continue to support the community as best we can because we believe there are many great opportunities to partner with the community,” said Mongwai. Mongwai and his wife, Ayanda, head up the HRM Roodepoort campus. He added that HRM was launched in Roodepoort in November last year, to restore hope in the West Rand community.
“We feel deep passion and a sense of urgency, as a church, to play our part in addressing some of the social challenges faced by local communities. For us, impacting our community in a positive way is a priority,” said Mongwai. The church has adopted the community of the Jerusalem settlement and has identified a number of areas that HRM could engage the community in.
“Some of these areas include the promotion of non-destructive recreational activities and the promotion of self-employment projects. There is also an opportunity to mentor members of the community who aspire to better their education or become employable,” concluded Mongwai.
