Way to go, Miëtte!
LITTLE FALLS – Local youngster excels on and off the netball field.
Small sweet crumb – the meaning of Miëtte Wissing’s name, perfectly describes Wissing’s size and nature but instead of a crumb, she is definitely the whole three-tier cake, with cherries on top.
Wissing, a Grade 6 pupil at Muldersdrift Primary School, is not only part of the Gauteng U12 netball team that will be competing against other provinces between 26 – 29 June, but will represent South Africa at the World Championships for Performing Arts in Long Beach, Los Angeles, as a vocalist, from 5 to 22 July.
Wissing’s mother, Melissa explained there is a rule in the Wissing house that the children are allowed to take up any recreational activity as long as they do it for a year before giving up on it. For Wissing, anything she picked up, she did not put down and only continued to excel at it.
“This is an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and it is a great honour to go to America,” Wissing added.
In Grade 1, Wissing picked up most of the interests that she now reaps gold medals for today, especially netball and singing. Wissing’s week is compiled of the following lessons and activities either before, during or after school: choir practice, choral verse, drama, hockey, vocal lessons, modelling, action netball, cross country, homework, school and Gauteng team netball, and athletics practice during athletics season. In her free time, Wissing also enjoys painting and photography.
Wissing explains she is able to achieve because of the grace of God and her Omega 3 supplements. “We love her to bits and are very proud of her,” said mother, Melissa Wissing.
Vocal coach, Lané Theron, said, “I am also very proud. She works very hard. It sometimes comes with tears and frustration but you can see she really wants it and is committed.”
Amid everything else, Wissing expects an ‘A’ average this term and aims to make the district (D2) hockey team in August this year.
