RADIOKOP – Melody Street residents hold a potjiekos competition as an exercise to get to know each other better as neighbours.
Residents from Melody Street in Radiokop got to know each other by holding a delicious potjiekos cook-off at the end of their street.
Ingrid Dinsmore said that they started holding events that enabled them to get to know their neighbours better, about two years ago and each event has been a roaring success.
“When there was a scourge of crime in this area we realised that we did not know each other and that is when my husband Peter and I invited our neighbours for a get-together,” she said.
The first time the residents met they wore name tags with their house numbers in order for them to know each other’s names but two years on they all know each other by name and friendships have blossomed.
Entrants had to give their dish an interesting name and prepare a dessert that went with the meal whilst decorating their tables as per the theme that they had chosen.
Dinsmore pointed that they had two judges who came to judge the pots namely, Chris Botha and Rudi Holtzhausen from EC Security.
She noted that knowing each other made their lives easier because if someone needed something there was always someone who could offer help and knowing your neighbour brought added security, friendship and lots of fun.
Dinsmore reminisced about the time she received overwhelming support from her neighbours after her husband fell off the roof, adding that all their neighbours were present offering help.
“Holding these events is very special for us because even the children get to know each other better and play together and help is always at hand,” she explained.
The first prize of the potjiekos competition went to the Dube Family that cooked a beef stew with malva pudding and custard.
The second prize was taken by the Jones family that cooked arros con pollo (a chicken dish) with specialised cupcakes.
The third prize was taken by the Jivan family that cooked a chicken potjie with an Indian twist accompanied by a peppermint tart.
