Truck driver killed and 19 injured in early evening accident

RUIMSIG - Truck driver allegedly lost control and overturned his vehicle, carrying 19 passengers.

A man was killed and several others injured when a truck overturned on Fairway Road in Ruimsig on the evening of 3 May.

ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaak said that shortly after 6pm paramedics arrived on the scene where they found a man lying next to a truck.

“Bystanders explained that moments after the truck overturned, several people on the scene, as well as some of the injured, lifted the truck back onto its wheels when they realised that someone was pinned underneath it,” explained Vermaak. He confirmed that sadly there was nothing that paramedics could do for the man and he was declared dead on the scene.

“Nineteen others were found on the scene with minor to moderate injuries,” said Vermaak. It is believed that all of the injured were sitting in the back of the truck and some in the front passenger compartment. According to Vermaak the 19 injured patients were transported to the Helen Joseph Hospital, Netcare Pinehaven Hospital and the Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital.

The exact cause of the incident is not yet known, however it is believed that the truck driver lost control of the vehicle when he went around a bend in the road. “Johannesburg Metro Police attended the scene and will conduct an investigation,” concluded Vermaak.

Metro Police was unable to provide comment at the time of publication.
