The 18 finalists each donate items to be auctioned off at the event to raise money for Cansa and a newly launched initiative, the TALK initiative. The TALK initiative will focus on children in disadvantaged communities and in each of the finalists community.
The T stands for tolerance and stems from respect. Parents should teach children self respect, respect for property and other people.
The A stands for appreciation. Children are naturally very self-centered it is necessary for them to to be taught gratification. L is for literacy. Children of today are faced with a myriad of traditional and digital literacies and it is important that children develop the skills to effectively navigate and decipher the constant information stream that surrounds them.
K is for kindness. Children need to learn that is not kind to judge other people and to say mean things.
This year’s finalists will focus on outreach and community programmes to assist in teaching children these valuable skills.
