Theft out of motor vehicle, especially at shopping centres in Struben’s Valley and Honeydew, is a serious concern – jamming is the major cause of the scourge.
Honeydew Police warned residents at the Sector 3 Community Policing Forum (CPF) meeting held on 10 February at Struben’s Valley Library.
Sector manager Warrant Officer Martin Kruger explained that Volkswagen Polo Vivos, Toyota Fortuners and Nissans were easy targets in Gauteng.
Incidents of robberies at residential and business premises, as well as burglary at residential premises, decreased in January in Sector 3.
However, theft out of motor vehicle and theft of motor vehicles increased in the sector, especially in Wilgeheuwel, Struben’s Valley and Honeydew.
Ward 97 Councillor Jaco Engelbrecht warned that if items such as laptops and expensive cameras were stolen from a vehicle, insurance companies are not likely to pay.
The sector chairperson Reg Mazibuko indicated that open land in the sector is a serious concern.
He said the land is allegedly occupied by vagrants. “There are people (vagrants) staying and sleeping in the greenbelt areas.”
He added that illegal street vending, hawkers and vagrants contribute to the decrease of property value.
