WELTEVREDEN PARK – Representative of South Africa does his Sensei proud in recent World Goju-Ryu Karate Championships in New Zealand.
Richard Theunen from the Palm Court Karate Centre in Weltevreden Park, took part in the World Goju-Ryu Karate Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, on 27 to 29 November.
Theunen was selected by the African Goju Karate Federation to represent South Africa in the junior (U18) kumite division. According to his instructor Sensei Mario Sequeira, Theunen had a tough draw and narrowly lost to the Czech Republic 2–1, but was also able to secure third place for the South African team. “I am extremely proud of Richard as he has shown great commitment and mental toughness over the years to reach this point in his career,” said Sensei Sequeira.
Theunen is a senior 1st Dan black belt at the Palm Court Karate Centre. “It was a great experience and I would love to do it again,” said Theunen. He has recently returned from New Zealand.
South Africa was led by top coach, Che Jagger and won 52 medals at the championships, second only to New Zealand.
