Young musician to open for Scott Stapp
MULDERSDRIFT – Howie Combrink, two-time Sama nominee, is surprised but excited to open for Scott Stapp in upcoming performance.
Scott Stapp, frontman of the rock band Creed, will be performing at the Heia Safari Ranch in Muldersdrift on 13 December. Watershed drummer Howie Combrink, is one of the opening acts.
Combrink said that he has always been a huge fan of Scott Stapp so when he got the message that he would open for Stapp, he was very excited. “I look forward to watching Stapp’s performance. I also look forward to sharing my music with everyone at the show. The audience is the reason I play music,” Combrink said.
Combrink grew up in Krugersdorp and still lives there. He said that his love for music started at the age of eight. “I come from a very musical family. My father, two uncles and my grandmother were professional musicians. I used to go with my dad to watch his band perform. One night I was sitting behind an amplifier on stage watching his drummer play and I was sold to music. Shortly after that I discovered a drum kit in my dad’s studio and started playing,” Combrink said. Combrink is still a drummer for Watershed, but has started to pursue a solo career as well as running his recording studio in Allen’s Nek.
Combrink was nominated for two South African Music Awards in for best newcomer of the year in 2015, and best adult contemporary album, “It was an amazing feeling to be nominated. I went to the nominations party to network and next thing I knew they had called my name up as a contender. It was extremely unexpected and I think it only became real when we arrived at Sun City and got out on the red carpet. It was an amazing experience.” Combrink described his family as a huge support. “They come to as many shows as possible,” he said.
“I wish to one day take home a Grammy Award. It is all about hard work and dedication. If you have those two things in place, the world is at your fingertips.” Combrink is working on a new album that will be released in the later part of 2016.
