Robberies at townhouse complexes escalate at an alarming rate
STRUBEN’S VALLEY – Police appealed to residents to have adequate security at their units as incidents of robberies are escalating.
Honeydew Police have issued a warning to the public about high robbery incidents in townhouse complexes.
Police have appealed to residents to ensure that they have adequate security in their units, especially at sliding doors and on top-floor units.
This follows an armed robbery incident that occurred in Struben’s Valley on 1 December, when five armed suspects allegedly jumped over a wall and gained access to a house in Fredenharry Street.
According to Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs, robbers fled the scene with the victim’s white Suzuki sedan vehicle, cellphones and other items.
Two robbers went to the back room and allegedly tied the mother and the child while the other three went to the main house and held up a woman and a man.
“The suspects assaulted the woman of the main house with a firearm, but she is not seriously injured,” WO Jacobs explained.
She further explained that police were investigating an incident of armed robbery and anyone with information is requested to contact the investigating officer, Detective Constable Godfrey Mabasa on 073 415 0692.
Police urged residents with sliding doors to install extra locks or dead bolts, as well as security gates as this would make it more difficult for robbers to gain access.
Residents should refrain from going outside alone during early morning hours, especially from 2am till 5am, as incidents where residents were attacked while smoking outside, have been reported.
WO Jacobs concluded that residents should not leave any doors open while busy in the unit and should close all windows when going to bed.
“Remove all keys from the doors and gates,” she concluded.
