Police educate elderly residents
HONEYDEW – Elderly residents have the right to report any abusive incidents to their nearest police station.
Honeydew SAPS participated in the 16 Days of Activism Campaign on 26 November by handing out pamphlets to elderly residents in Zandspruit.
Warrant Officer Leshaba Ramalatso handed out the pamphlets and educated the elderly on how to keep safe.
Elderly residents were informed about the kinds of abuses and also advised to report all incidents of abuse to the nearest police station.
Here are some of the topics elderly residents were educated about:
• Financial, economic, or exportation abuse: It is illegal or fraudulent to use an older person’s money, property or valuable assets without their consent
• Physical abuse: Any physical abuse that could result in injury or death
• Neglect: When elderly residents are not provided with care and basic necessities required for their physical well-being, and when the elderly are neglected or abandoned without any visible means of support
• Psychological, emotional and verbal abuse: This include rejection, isolation and name calling which usually leaves a person feeling degraded or humiliated.
