Housebreaking incidents a concern in Weltevreden Park
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Incidents of housebreaking and robberies are still a concern in Weltevreden Park.
Honeydew SAPS conducted foot patrols in some of the hotspot streets in Weltevreden Park on 13 November following a concern of housebreaking incidents.
The police appealed to residents to be more aware of crime prevention measures at all times during the day and night.
Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs explained that police found numerous gates in the suburb open as well as the front doors.
“Housebreakings and robberies are still a concern and residents are urged to look at their security. Test your alarm systems and panic buttons on a regular basis,” WO Jacobs explained.
She elaborated that residents should report any suspicious people immediately. During the patrol the police also handed out awareness pamphlets.
Here are some of the tips to help prevent housebreaking incidents:
- Know all emergency numbers
- Know your neighbours and build a relationship of mutual trust and support
- Keep cash and valuables in banks or safes
- Store your firearms in a safe
- Make provision for good outside lighting, but switch the lights off during the day
- Don’t leave your gates, garage, front or back door open or partially open – it serves as an invitation to burglars
- Never open the door automatically whenever the bell rings or if someone knocks.
A watchdog is a good, early warning system.
If your house alarm goes off, or you hear strange noises or your dogs bark switch on the outside lights, BUT do not go outside!!!!
When employing someone, request their identity document and make a copy thereof for safekeeping. Check their previous employment references and do security clearances at the police.
Install the best security you can afford, for example the security gates at outside doors. Keep these gates locked. If possible, fix a door viewer and latch chain.
When approaching your house entrance by foot or by car, ensure that it is safe to enter and that you have not been followed. Be aware of persons loitering at the entrance or street.
