RUIMSIG – Young disabled horse riders demonstrate their abilities on horse back.
Families, disability schools and volunteers celebrated the SA Riding for the Disabled Association (Sarda) Fun Day on 7 November.
Children and their ponies as well as various fun activities were the highlights of the day at The Earth Centre at Sarda Gauteng in Ruimsig.
Young horse riders demonstrated their ability on horseback and what they have achieved though their therapeutic riding lessons at Sarda Gauteng.
A beautiful Christmas cake was donated to the centre by the SA Decorators Guild while visitors got to meet the centre’s miniature donkeys.
Some of the participants came from The Gateway School in Ruimsig.
The school is situated just a kilometre away from the centre and pupils have been riding at the centre every Monday morning for the past 10 years.
Some of the pupils live with disabilities including visual impairment, blindness, cerebral palsy and mental disabilities.
Five other young horse riders came from Lantern School situated in Lindhaven.
The school’s occupational therapist Terina Ramna said the children are aged between six and seven with learning difficulties.
“We believe that each child is good at something. They might be disabled but they are also good at something,” said Ramna.
Sarda branch secretary Nicole Christie said they would like to thank their sponsors for helping to make the event a success.
She said without all the helpers they would not be able to do the work that they do and continue to put the ‘able’ back into disabled.
