ER24 urges motorists to be alert while driving

JOBURG – ER24 warns motorists to be vigilant drivers, and offers tips to use on the roads.

ER24 is urging motorists to be alert while driving. A number of people have either been injured or killed in collisions across several parts of the country in recent days.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said they have attended to accidents that have claimed the lives of at least 17 people.

“Just over 80 people sustained minor to critical injuries in these collisions,” said Bodasing.

Incidents included that of three people who died and four others who were injured in a head on collision in Cape Town.

A woman sustained fatal injuries after she lost control of her vehicle in Bloemfontein.

Three people were killed and a woman was injured in a collision in Gauteng.

In KwaZulu-Natal 13 others were injured in a taxi rollover which killed one person.

Below ER24 gives some tips:

  • Ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy
  • Refrain from speeding
  • Be mindful of other road users
  • Do not drive while under the influence
  • Do not allow yourself to become distracted while driving
  • Keep a safe following distance
  • Do not become aggressive or resort to road rage
  • Refrain from skipping stop signs and red traffic lights
  • Be cautious when changing lanes
  • Avoid texting and driving, and talking on your cell phone while driving
  • If there are children in the vehicle, ensure that they are appropriately restrained.

“With the festive season fast approaching, people are urged to plan ahead,” said Bodasing. “If you are driving to your destination, remember to conduct a safety check on your vehicle prior to leaving.”

Bodasing concluded by saying that you need to check if any of your tyres need replacing, and that your wiper blades, headlights and signal lights are working.
