Honeydew Police reveals crime statistics

HONEYDEW – Honeydew Station Commander Colonel Tobie Terblanche discussed the latest crime statistics for the Honeydew area at the monthly CPF meeting.

Station Commander of Honeydew Police Station, Colonel Tobie Terblanche revealed the latest crime statistics at the monthly CPF meeting on 3 November.

Col Terblanche indicated that generally the crime rates have come down in all the sectors during the last six months but increased again during October.

He said the worse affected areas – especially with contact crimes such as assaults, murders, robberies and attempted murders – are in Sector 4 and they include Cosmo City, Itsoseng, Zandspruit, Kya Sand and Sonnedal.

He said robberies at residences have stabilised but robberies at businesses are increasing.

“Robbers are especially targeting delivery trucks that deliver at small spaza shops. We especially need the input of the community. They are the first step to creating a more crime-free zone,” Col Terblanche explained.

He added that another big problem in this area is domestic fights and murders.

“During two previous cases, men set fire to houses with women and children inside. In both cases the men, women and children passed away. We need to find a way to control such crimes,” said Col Terblanche.

He further added that in Sector 3 (Struben’s Valley, Clearwater, Little Falls, Amorosa, Aanwins, Alsef, Ambot, Kimbult, Eagle Canyon, Fever Tree Estate, Harveston, Honeydew Ridge, Honeydew View, Honeydew Manor, Honeydew, Milky Way, Radiokop, Laser Park, Wilgeheuwel, Wilgespruit, Willowbrook, Ruimsig, Poortview, Très Jolie and Zonnehoewe) the biggest crime problems are housebreakings and robbery.

“Wilgeheuwel and Weltevreden Park areas have been targeted recently. Robberies at houses are especially increasing in the areas where road works are done,” said Col Terblanche.

He concluded with statistics of Sector 1 (North Riding, Northgate, Northworld, Sundowner, Strijdom Park, Sonneglans, Bromhof, Boskruin, Bush Hill, Kelly Ridge, Glen Dayson, Hunter’s Hill, Randpark Ridge) of which he said the biggest problem are muggings and drugs.

“Robberies with other dangerous weapons besides a gun have increased a lot in this sector. We also managed to arrest 59 suspects for drugs and 57 for drinking and driving,” said Col Terblanche.

Captain Silvester Badirwang added from the detective’s side that Sector 4 has been divided into three sections and that is making a difference in controlling the crime.

Capt Badirwang warned business owners to close businesses earlier and add panic buttons to their security systems to avoid robberies.
