SA hockey wins, but loses out on Rio

MALANSHOF – SA hockey teams win the Greenfields African Hockey Championship but cannot qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The SA hockey men’s and women’s teams triumphed at the Greenfields African Hockey Championship, winning both finals at the Ranburg Hockey Arena on 1 November. However, despite these wins, neither team qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

This is due to the teams not meeting the Olympic Game’s qualifying criteria, which the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) agreed upon in May.

On 1 November, the SA women’s team beat Ghana 3–0 in the final, keeping a clean sheet in the tournament. The men’s team beat Egypt 4–2 .
