Taxi ranks get free WiFi
JOBURG – Commuters at 600 taxi ranks countrywide will enjoy free WiFi.
A new dimension in connectivity for commuters has started.
Six hundred taxi ranks countrywide will all soon have free WiFi and commuters will be able to easily access internet right from their taxi ranks.
This is the combined effort by Pandocom,Top 6 Taxi Association and the Sierra Groups.
They believe 600 taxi ranks countrywide have a positive impact on the lives of South Africans.
The groups said overcoming this challenge has been a top priority, as the importance of connectivity is becoming increasingly evident. It is done to help commuters search for jobs, financial information and stay in touch with the latest news around the globe.
This massive new project started at the Springs Taxi Rank in Ekurhuleni.
Daya Bramdaw at Pandocom said, “The solution will offer commuters access to an education portal that will host jobs ports, health information, financial literacy courses, small business enterprise development workshops and even sports news.
Bramdaw said for taxi drivers, there will also be a TETA-certified driver training skills programme, tips on defensive and offensive driving techniques and even first-aid and firefighting courses.
“This is only the first phase with the taxi driver training skills programme to follow,” said Bramdaw.
He said it is also their intention to provide WiFi access within the taxis themselves while they continue working on the content development process as well as increasing the modules on the certified driver training course and small business development workshops.”
Bramdaw said the potential impact is huge, as about 36 million South Africans commute monthly using public transport.
“Clearly, this project is going to make a significant dent in the digital divide. Moreover, since the project will be funded through advertising campaigns and a taxi branding strategy, it will give advertisers the perfect opportunity to interact with a previously untapped target market,” said Sam Karipane from the Top 6 Taxi Management.
Chris Lithuli from the Nothern Taxi Liason committee said they have not yet been informed about this massive initiative.
