Friends of Kloofendal Nature Reserve holds AGM

KLOOFENDAL – Friends of Kloofendal hold their annual general meeting and raise key issues involving the reserve.

The Friends of Kloofendal Nature Reserve (FroK) committee hosted an AGM at the Kloofendal Nature Reserve on 17 October, regarding the matters that concern the reserve.

A bird ringing at Hamerkop Bird Reserve took place in the morning before the AGM where six participants enjoyed a guided tour with Grant Egen, who takes monthly bird walks in Kloofendal on every second Sunday of each month.

Professional public speaker Douglas Kruger spoke on the topic Think Differently, where he explained how one can view situations from a different perspective by seeing a problem and solving it in an innovative way.

Chairperson of FroK, Steve Spottiswoode spoke about how the group has had another successful year. He discussed all the activities its members have been involved in.

“Karin Spottiswoode will introduce new energies into environmental education, expanding the school tours with some large groups, while the weekend family response has shrunk,” Steve said.

He added that the old 1884 Confidence Gold Mine continues to bring people from around Johannesburg, and the reserve has benefited from the increased activity at the Heritage Portal, which is led by Rod Kruger.

The Friends of Kloofendal are in the process of printing a complete photographic list of wild flowers found at the reserve. In the booklet, Bird Guide, Grant Egen produced a one-page bird list with sightings of birds in different areas in the reserve.

Spottiswoode also spoke about the legal requirements of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act of 2004, including regulations involving invasive alien plants that affect the reserve. Spottiswoode ended the AGM by thanking everyone for their encouragement in the past year and wished for Friends of Kloofendal to grow from strength to strength.

The next activities at the Kloofendal Nature Reserve is a Spring Flowers Walk on 24 October.
