Netball keeps Zandspruit girls away from the streets

ZANDSPRUIT – Netball works well for Zandspruit girls

Zanele Cindi, mother-of-four, is a netball coach with passion.

She said netball is very scarce in the informal settlements these days, and that has prompted her to start the Zandspruit netball team in 2014.

“I am trying very hard to plant a seed of passion and drive for the girls here to play netball,” Cindi said.

She played netball when she was growing up, and said, “I encourage young girls to play netball as it will keep them away from all sorts of bad lifestyle influences. Hopefully, it will minimise their chances of becoming crime victims in the streets,” Cindi said.

Cindi said she has been helping the girls who play netball since 1997.

Every afternoon, after finishing her house chores, the unemployed Cindi goes to the netball grounds to do what she loves the most – coach netball.

Cindi said there are lots of challenges that affect the team such as finances and lack of sponsors.
