MULDERSDRIFT– A Braai Day-inspired challenge took place at Vigour and Verve Restaurant at Silverstar Casino.

With Heritage Day – also known as National Braai Day – around the corner, there are different recipes and methods you can use to braai. The Spring Sosatie Scramble took place on 16 September at the Vigour and Verve restaurant at Silverstar Casino.

Master Chef judge Benny Masekwameng, known as Chef Benny, led the competition where members of the media and public personalities where treated to see him in action. He prepared a variety of braai chicken kebabs with delicious extras such as peppadews, bacon, pap and mushrooms. The rules of the competition were for participants to mimic his technique, presentation and taste. Executive Chef at the Vigour and Verve restaurant Kerwin Buckley was also part of the judging panel with Chef Benny.

Participants were split into groups of three and were provided with all the ingredients. They were also required to come up with names of their groups to prepare the kebas within an hour.

Chef Benny advised contestants to be creative when cooking the kebas, monitor the time the kebabs grill on the braai and to add in their own unique flavours. “Everyone seemed to understand the recipe and enjoyed preparing the kebabs,” he said.

Team Three, which consisted of Mr South Africa Armand du Plessis, Shona Jonsson and Doreen Molefe won the Spring Sosatie Scramble, beating five other contestants. The winners walked away with a one-night stay at Silverstar Hotel, a R500 voucher to eat at any restaurant at Silverstar Casino and the winning sosatie will be featured on the Vigour and Verve restaurant for a year.

Du Plessis said that although they faced tough competition, it was a simple recipe to follow that he plans to also prepare on Braai Day to perfection.
