UPDATE and GALLERY: Resident shoots back at hijackers
LITTLE FALLS – Resident does not give up hijacked vehicle without a fight.
A brave resident shot back at armed hijackers who drove off with his Mercedes-Benz in Little Falls on 8 September.
Police said a search is still on for the four men who fled after hijacking and robbing the man. The shooting and hijacking took place at 11.10am at the corner of Fredenharry Road and Kwiksilwer Avenue.
Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said the man’s E63 Mercedes-Benz, firearm and some of his belongings, including cash, were stolen.
She said the man did not give up his car without shooting back at the criminals.
Vincent Malinga from Dunmar Security said they received a call from residents alerting them about the shooting.
“On our arrival, we only found empty cartridges everywhere and eyewitnesses told us about what happened,” said Malinga.
Malinga said the man was driving to his house when he was hijacked by the armed men.
He said right at the corner, the man slowed down because of the stop sign, but was ambushed by the robbers who demanded his car.
Malinga said after the hijackers succeeded in getting the car from the man, they tried to shoot at the man who responded with fire as the men drove off.
Malinga couldn’t tell whether the hijackers had their own car before hijacking the man or not.
But one resident said one of the robbers was shot at and injured during the robbery.
Jacobs couldn’t confirm allegations about the shooting of one hijacker, as no arrests were made and no blood was found on scene.
She added that empty cartridges were found, and Honeydew Police are investigating.
A resident near where the incident took place said all he heard were several gunshots.
“I was in my house, I ran out only to find the hijacked man and other residents,” he said.
