Organisation gives cats a 10th life

ROODEPOORT – Friends of the Cat help find new homess for stray cats and educate people on cat care.

After operating for 24 years, the non-profit organisation Friends of the Cat is still finding new homes for stray cats and creating awareness to people about their responsibility toward cats.

Founder Adele Joffe said the goal is to educate people on the importance of sterilising a cat, ensuring it is given the correct food (wet and dry food) to encourage vaccination and mostly, to find homes for strays.

“We foster a lot of cats all across Gauteng. We want to encourage people to adopt a cat from us rather that to buy one, as there are so many in desperate need of a warm, loving home,” said Adele.

The organisation was founded in 1991 by Adele and her son Jeremy and they said they started because of the love and pity they have toward vulnerable animals.

“At first, my son would dress up in a cat uniform and sell badges in order to generate funds,” said Adele.

Adele said although the organisation has been operating for long, they still battle financially.

She asked to be contacted in the case a stray cat is found or if anybody wants to adopt a cat.
