Residents of Plot 52 in Extension 10, Zandspruit continue to experience the stench since a sewerage pipe burst the beginning of August.
Resident William Makeleni complained the problem was dire and affecting them. “The whole street smells badly and the raw sewage spills all over the street,” he explained.

Another resident Freddy Ramuema said the problem was harmful to their health. “We tried to fix the pipe on our own but we couldn’t. We initially hired the plumber to fix the problem since the authorities were failing us but it did not work,” he said.
He added that they reported to Ward 114 councillor Maureen Schneemann and she promised them that she would report to the relevant authorities.
“Children often play here, especially after school and it is no longer healthy as the raw sewage often spills all over the street,” concluded Ramuema.
Councillor Schneemann explained that she only learned about the burst pipe when she visited the area on 13 August. “Residents only reported to me when I was in the area,” she said.
She further explained that she was not aware that the problem had existed for more than three weeks. “I reported to the Council again yesterday (21 August) and they should be fixing it today if not, I will report again,” concluded Schneemann.
Joburg Water internal communications officer Seipati Nyawuza said they were investigating with the relevant department.
