CPF committed to clean open land
STRUBEN’S VALLEY – Honeydew Sector 3 CPF is determined to address the unoccupied open land problem.
Sector 3 Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Reg Mazibuko is adamant that his vision of cleaning the open land in the sector, would prevail.
Mazibuko was addressing residents during the CPF meeting held on 12 August at Struben’s Valley Library.
He indicated that open areas were occupied by vagrants but they are not sure if those occupants are criminals or just homeless people.
“We need to identify the owners of those areas, especially where we have problems with vagrants. This is our main drive until the end of the year,” explained Mazibuko.
The Sector also indicated that there has been a decrease in reported crime incidents compared to last month.
Warrant Officer Martin Kruger explained that crime incidents in Ruimsig, Wilgeheuwel and Struben’s Valley have decreased.
“Most of the reported crime incidents occurred on Wednesday, Thursday and mostly on Friday between 12pm midnight until 4am,” said WO Kruger.
Ward 97 committee member Judy Wilson told the meeting that sometimes street vendors are allegedly armed and pose a critical threat to motorists.
“On Saturdays you cannot drive safely on Hendrik Potgieter Road. Vendors are armed and allegedly intimidating motorists,” Wilson explained.
Carolyn Lanzillotti was elected as the new vice chairperson of the CPF after Dimitri Nel resigned from the executive.
Lanzillotti explained that Radiokop was allegedly targeted by cable thieves.
“We had at least two incidents before where people tried to steal copper cable,” she said.
Honeydew CPF chairperson Tony Botes encouraged residents to strengthen their WhatsApp groups.
“Keep them small. Resident Associations help escalate the issue,” Botes advised.
He further explained that JMPD has been more proactive recently and this was contributing to the drop in crime.
