Foodies sharpen their skills

MULDERSDRIFT – Local junior chefs sharpen their kitchen skills.

Junior Muldersdrift chefs took things up a notch during a recent workshop hosted by the Guvon Academy, which is the training facility of Guvon Hotels. The practical workshops consist of a two-day session once a month, and it will last until September. The recent workshop was particularly noteworthy in sharpening junior chefs’ skills, which includes knife handling and cutting methods. A total of 16 chefs are currently enrolled in the programme.

Maropeng Hotel and Riverstone Lodge are two of the non-Guvon hotels that are currently participating in the programme. During the workshop, the junior chefs learned the importance of teamwork and how to create positive guest interactions. One of the attendees, Albertinah Mbetheni who has been working at Maropeng Hotel since 2005 said she has enjoyed learning about modern presentation and new cooking skills. “I am still learning but I feel more and more confident after every workshop,” she said. Executive chef and Guvon Academy facilitator and assessor Dion Von Wielligh said the opportunity to work with students has been rewarding. “It is great to see chefs with a passion and zeal to learn and better themselves,” he said.

He blithely added that, “It is encouraging for them to have the opportunity to improve their skills and as a result improve their career prospects.”

He also said it is always important for one to invest in their staff through development and training.

As if that weren’t enough, the visibly passionate foodies also took part in the Ready, Steady, Cook style competition aimed at encouraging creativity and teamwork.

Gilbert Hickman from Muldersdrift’s Communication Action Group (MCAG) highlighted the programme is also aimed at uplifting the Muldersdrift community.

“We are grateful that so many of our establishments agree that investment in their staff and their surrounding community is not only beneficial to their establishment but to a much broader community too. It also creates so many positive touch points for visitors to our area.”
