What to do for Mandela Day
JOBURG - Mandela Day is here and a few organisations are honouring the late Nelson Mandela, by donating to the less fortunate. Here are some of the planned events that you can help support.
16–17 July: Join JAM at their headquarters to sort and package donations and sew blankets.
17 July: Sunrise Estate in 5th Road, Northwold, will clean the area surrounding the village and nearby spruit.
The clean-up will be conducted for 67 minutes, in the spirit of the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, and it will start at 10am.
17 July: Mintek in Ferndale will hold its Mandela Day event and donate to a charity organisation.
17–21 July: University of Johannesburg will install renewable lights for the school children in Limpopo, to help them do their night-time homework. Solar lights will be installed by a team of lecturers and students from the Engineering Faculty of the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Engineering students will install solar lighting into all 30 homes in the Gwakwani village.
17 July: Stop Hunger Now will host a mass meal packing on Mandela Day along with Tsogo Sun, and the Sandton Convention Centre on 5th floor.
The meals packed will be distributed among 250 unregistered Early Childhood Development Centres around Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, bringing relief to almost 15 000 children who receive hot nutritious meals.
18 July: Build the Future, a non-governmental organisation, invites the public to donate their time and do a variety of projects at a pre-school in Kya Sand at 8.30am –12.30pm. The public is also encouraged to donate food like rice, cooking oil, long-life milk, Milo, staff salaries, sets of garden forks, spades and rakes, and lots more. 18 July : As part of SANBI’s outreach to honour South Africa’s first state president, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden will hold an Open Day for the public on Mandela Day, and access to the garden will be free. The public is, however, urged to take this opportunity to make donations for charitable causes. Boxes placed at the entrance for the public to make donations of any kind, be it toys, clothes and tin food. Monetary

18 July: SA Riding for the Disabled Association (Sarda) invites the public to take part in a bird walk and talk with birding expert, André Marx. At
R150 a ticket, you can join them at Random Harvest Nursery in Muldersdrift at 7am.
18 July: The JAM team will host a wish list drive at the following shopping centres in Gauteng: Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, Clearwater Mall, and Maponya Mall.
18 July: City Sightseeing Joburg invites people to nominate a person who they feel should win a one-day ticket to explore Joburg. Nominations closes on 18 July and tickets will be valid until 15 September. Sixty seven nominated recipients will receive sets of one-day tickets. 18 July: Members of Joburg Ballet will visit Soweto and Orange Farm to teach, perform and work with members of those communities as part of the company’s 2015 “67 Minutes for Mandela” initiative. One group will be based at Uncle Tom’s Community Centre, corner Khumalo and Maseko streets in Orlando West, from 10.30am, and the other will be at the Old Multi-Purpose Hall, 1217 Link Road, in Orange Farm Extension 1.
