Blanket drive at Panorama Primary

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Panorama Primary School gets together to extend their hands to keep the less fortunate warm this winter.

This time last year, it was only a dream for pupils and the staff at Panorama Primary School for them to take part in the 67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day drive.

The 67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day started as a campaign but has now turned into a global movement.

The campaign was founded by Carolyn Steyn and calls on people from around the world to knit, sew or crochet a blanket and help keep someone warm this winter.

According to Steyn, the difference about this campaign is that the blankets are handmade and that proves that a lot of love and passion go into making something, rather than just buying a ready-made one.

With the help of their families, the school pupils and staff managed to turn their dream into a reality of being part of this movement.

According to one of the teachers, Carin de Jager, at the beginning of the project they had a goal of knitting 10 blankets. “Parents, children, grannies, aunts and staff members knitted and crocheted squares, which were joined together to make blankets. At the end of the project we managed to complete 23 blankets,” explained De Jager.

On 12 June, blankets were handed over to the organisers of the blanket drive. “It took a whole lot of people and a lot of effort to make so many blankets and once again the pupils and the families of Panorama Primary showed their generosity and involvement in the community,” said De Jager.

She thanked everyone who participated to make their blanket drive a success. She added that next year they will start knitting early with the aim of providing 50 blankets.

Blankets will be distributed on Mandela Day, which occurs annually on 18 July to different charities throughout the country.
