Break the stigma

WELTEVREDEN PARK – A non-profit organisation aims to break the stigma associated with addiction and alcoholism.

Non-profit organisation, Break the Shame is based in Weltevreden Park. Their aim is to break the shame that is associated with one who has/had an addiction or alcohol problem. “People need to feel that it is all right to talk about it. It is all right to stand up and say, ‘Listen I am a recovering addict’, and not be ashamed,” said co- founder of Break the Shame, Brendon Richardson.

The organisation was founded by two recovering addicts who knew the effects of drugs and have been clean for many years. They are also now both counsellors . “We want to help those [who] are going through what we went through. We want to say don’t throw your life away, there is hope and help out there, don’t give away your soul,” said co-founder Elani Richardson.

Break the Shame works with businesses, schools and families or individuals that need help. “Often we find that people will have drug or alcohol problems but then are stuck on what to do because they feel so alone,” explained Elani.

They have offered some advice to drug/alcohol users:

• There is always hope

• You are not alone in the battle you are fighting

• Reach out for help, you will find it

• Talk to friends and family let them know what it is that you are going through

• Seek professional help.

Brendon further added that it is important for addicts to remember that no matter how they take the drug, it is still going to damage them. He explained that Crystal Meth and CAT are the most dangerous and damaging drugs on the market at the moment.

They urge the community to contact them should they need any help with addiction problems.
